The White Grunt

The Dolphinfish belongs to the Coryphaenidae family. Its length can reach a maximum of 2 m, but the average length reaches 1 m. Its average weight is 14 kg but it can reach more than 30 kg. It has a maximum lifetime of 4 years. It can reproduce all year round. The best time to catch it is from April to June. There are two species of dolphins. It is easy to distinguish the two species. They both have the same elongated and spindle-shaped shape. The single dorsal fin extends over the entire length of the body. Its upper teeth are broad, triangular and finely crenellated. Its lower teeth are vertical and pointed. Its dental formula is as follows: 13-1 to 2-13 /12-1 to 2-12. Its back is brown to olive to dark grey. Its belly is dirty white. The first dorsal fin is large and broad, it is sickle-shaped, its origin is located in the pectoral armpit. It can be fished in February and from May to December. They have a large body, a long dorsal fin, and adults have smoky grey-black or blue-black flanks and a lighter belly. Their scales are dark on the skin and become paler at the edges, giving the appearance of horizontal dots. Mature males have a hump immediately behind the dorsal fin. The youngest fish are green or brown. They are purely oceanic fish and, unlike many fish called "sea lions", they are a real Bass.
