The body is covered with overlapping dermal denticles that have five to seven longitudinal veins (three in very young individuals) ending in three to five teeth. The coloring is a yellowish grey to greenish on the top and white to yellow below. A characteristic dark spot at the tip of the snout is more or less visible, especially in young sharks.

Unlike other members of Scombridae, mackerel do not have a black area on the front of the first dorsal fin.
