The Blueback herring
The Blueback Herring belongs to the Clupeidae Family. They reach a maximum size of about 40 centimeters and are assumed to live up to 8 years. They spawn from mid-March to the end of May. The Blueback herring can be fished all year round. These fish are silvery in color, have a series of scutes along their bellies and are characterized by a deep blue-green back. What distinguish this fish the most from other species is the black to dark color of its peritoneum (the mucous membrane of the abdominal cavity). It is one of the "distinctive" North American shads. They are often confused with alewives because it is difficult to differentiate between blue shad and alewife and, together, these two species are often considered collectively as "river herring". Female have larger eyes, greater body depth and a pearl to peritoneal white lining.

The Paddlefish belongs to the Polyodontidae family. The adult size is between 1.2 m to 1.8 m. It has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. They spawn in April to May. It can be fished from mid-May to June. The long paddle-shaped snout of this fish represents about one-third of its total body length. The snout helps stabilize fish as they swim and also contains specialized cells that help detect swarms of plankton that this species feeds on. The skin is smooth. Small individuals are pink at the back and white at the base; for older people, around 25 à 30 cm, the body color changes to bluish grey on the back and cream on the vent. The eyes are small compared to the rest of the head and body. On the underside of the snout are two little barbells in front of a large, toothless mouth. When seen through the mouth, the gills are large and show the many closely spaced filaments that trap microscopic food. On each side, a gill cover extends backwards, ending with a long pointed flap. The skeleton is composed of cartilage rather than bone. The tip of the spine extends into the upper lobe of the heterrorcercal tail, much like a shark does.

The Colorado Pikeminnow belongs to the Cyprinidae family. The average length of the Colorado pikeminnow is 52.5 cm. The longest Colorado pikeminnow reported is 180 cm. The maximum age recorded for Colorado pikeminnow is 12 years. They spawn from late spring to mid-summer. Fishing is extremely restricted and prohibited because the Colorado Pikeminnow is an endangered species. Like the other three species of pikeminnows, its extended body resembles that of pike. The cone-shaped, slightly flattened head is elongated and forms nearly a quarter of the length of the body. Color levels range from bright olive green on the back to a lighter yellowish shade on the sides, through white. Young fish have a dark mark on the caudal fin. The dorsal and anal fins generally have 9 rays. Pharyngeal teeth are long and hooked.

The Bleak fish is a Cyprinidae. In general, its average size is 10 to 15 cm and its weight is 15 to 50 g. However, some individuals can reach up to 60 g for a size of 25 cm. The bleak has a lifespan of 6-7 years. The spawning period is between April and August. It can lay up to 7000 spawns. You can fish bleak from June to September. This fish swims quite fast and offers a little resistance during the catch. The bleak is a fish with an elongated body that is very compressed laterally, allowing it to have a high velocity. The upper jaw is shorter than the lower jaw. The mouth of the bleak is oriented upwards (above), a typical character of fish that seek their food on the surface. The caudal fin is strongly indented and the caudal peduncle is thin. The dorsal fin is inserted behind the pelvic fins and has a shorter base than the dorsal fin. The Yellow Perch belongs to the Percidae family. The yellow perch measures on average 10 to 25 cm in length and weighs between 50 and 200 g (up to 36 cm for 500 g). The average lifespan is about 7 years. It breeds from April to May. It can be fished all year round. Its body is elongated and oval. Its head is moderately high and rounded at the tip. Its snout is obtuse and moderately long; it does not extend beyond the lower jaw. The mouth is terminal and slightly oblique. The jaws have small teeth. The operculum is finished with a strong thorn. There are 2 distinctly separated dorsal fins. The first dorsal spine is high and rounded, the spines are strong, the rays vary from 13 to 15. The second dorsal fin is almost as high, with 1 to 2 spines and 12 to 15 rays. The caudal is slightly forked. The color of the yellow perch varies according to its size and habitat. The back and dorsal surface of the head vary from bright green to golden brown to olive. The sides are pale yellow to yellow-green with about 7 vertical black bars of decreasing width. The ventral face of the head and body varies from grey to milk white. The dorsal and caudal fins range from yellow to green; the edge of the first dorsal fin is often black. In males in spawning livery the colors will be more intense: in particular, the pelvic and anal fins which are then bright orange.
