The Swordfish
The Swordfish belongs to the Xiphiidae family. Swordfish reach a maximum size of 455 cm in total length and a maximum weight of 650 kg, although individuals caught generally measure 120 to 190 cm in length for 140 kg. The second dorsal fin is relatively large, but always less than half the height of the first. There is no ridge between the two dorsal fins. The pectoral fins are short and tapered. The body is covered with overlapping dermal denticles that have five to seven longitudinal veins (three in very young individuals) ending in three to five teeth. The coloring is a yellowish grey to greenish on the top and white to yellow below. A characteristic dark spot at the tip of the snout is more or less visible, especially in young sharks.
